Memento

Presented by The Incubation Series
May 5th–May 25th, 2023
at Practice Gallery

Opening Reception
May 5th, 2023
5:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Mementos monumentalize the everyday, reminding us of felt absences and sifting through the fog of memory. They can be found in ardent daydreams that explore the museum of the senses, on yellowed pages from marginal archives of the quotidian, in patches of fabric and footage excavated from camera rolls, and alongside memorials that probe classical colossi for cultural and climatic meaning. This exhibition brings together the work of four artists who evoke and question their diverse social, historical, and emotional environments. Working across the media of sculpture, Claymation, video installation, and photography, Yi-Han Huang, Jingyi Li, Kevin Mulvey, and Aislinn Pentecost-Farren complicate the many stages within the life cycles of the memento: acquired, hoarded, concealed, cherished, discarded, and reimagined.
Memento features the work of UPenn MFA candidates and is co-organized by Rhea Swain, Emma Nell Jacobs, and Lynette Qiuyang Shen. It is the twenty-first exhibition in the Incubation Series—a student-led initiative that fosters new ways of making, exhibiting, and seeing art. This exhibition is made possible with the generous support of the College Center for Visual Culture and the Department of the History of Art at Bryn Mawr College, and The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, the Department of the History of Art, School of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of Fine Arts, Weitzman School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania.
