Is there life after shadowban? In mcdazzler is dead Alicia McDaid and her social media persona @mcdazzler bring “two girls one cup terrorism aesthetic” realness to Practice Space Gallery with a live performance series and photo/ video installation featuring photos made in collaboration with digital artist Alicia Gordon. In an attempt to deconstruct a persona that was created in defiance of the notion that one must constantly advertise their identity online, McDaid wonders if she has become a mockery of herself when she realizes the algorithms have left her behind after a decade of community guidelines violations. Is mcdazzler’s commitment to social media disobedience really a battle cry of resistance or just a cloaking device to scare off prospective romantic interests and employers?
A durational opening performance begins at 7pm on Friday March 1. Additional performances and variety show series are scheduled for Saturdays at 7 pm on March 9, 16 and 23, and ill feature Philadelphia- and New York-based artists Rose Luardo, Katie Hartman, Ruby McCollister, Lu Chekowsky, Jen Sanders, Adrienne Truscott, Audra Guest, Sarah Knittell, Wolfgang Hanulec and more.
Alicia McDaid
Philadelphia native Alicia McDaid is a performance/video artist, actor and painter currently based in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Berlin. Her work depicts a shattering of the self into various personas that create a vulnerable, absurd and grotesque cacophony. She recently starred in the Loretta Fahrenholz filmTrash The Musical; performed “Thank You For Letting Me Be Obsessed With You” at Fluentum Collective in Berlin; and appeared on ABC’sThe Prank Panel.Past performance highlights include the Hammer Museum and Pieter Performance Space in Los Angeles, On The Boards Festival in Seattle, and Portland Institute of Contemporary Art’s TBA Festival.
